With over 4,000 different treatment courts across the country, these specialty courts are dedicated to changing the behavior of participants to reduce recidivism and support them on the journey to sobriety. Since 1989, treatment court programs have expanded from serving only adults to include specialty courts including juvenile drug treatment, DUI/DWI, family treatment, mental health, veterans, tribal courts, and more.
Formerly known as DWI Court, the Brazoria County Recovery Court program focuses on supporting participants in overcoming addiction. Unlike traditional probation or incarceration, which often fail to address the root causes of addiction, Recovery Court provides personalized, one-on-one support tailored to each individual’s needs. Participants are guided through treatment and encouraged to remain in the program until they are committed to their recovery journey.
Judge Lori Rickert, the presiding judge over Recovery Court, expresses fulfillment in witnessing participants’ growth and transformation. Beyond individual success stories, Recovery Court also contributes to public safety by significantly reducing the risk of reoffending. Participants are given the opportunity to rebuild their lives and reconnect with their communities, with the program designed to last 18 months initially.
An integral component of the program is the SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring® (SCRAM CAM®) bracelet, which serves as both an accountability tool and a reminder of the commitment to sobriety, helping individuals make positive choices early in their recovery process. Treatment is highlighted as a crucial component, offering participants the necessary tools to navigate life and avoid relapse.
