The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has issued an updated Advisory on the use of Biomarkers in both treatment and judicial environments. See The Role of Biomarkers in the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders, 2012 Revision. The original advisory, warning of the potential for false positives with biomarker testing, was issued in 2006.
According to SAMHSA, the advisory was issued in order to update professionals on increased scientific knowledge about alcohol biomarkers and to discuss their relevance for clinical, medical, and forensic purposes. The update also includes what SAMHSA calls “potential strategies” for the use and interpretation of biomakers, based on known limitations, in varying circumstances such as clinical, criminal justice, and impaired healthcare provider settings.
